Types of Harm

Emotional

What happens in real time, often inside a single practice. This is reactive coaching behavior (yelling, humiliation, anger, etc.) and the immediate response it produces in an athlete. It's defined by acute stress activation, happening over and over, and is the most visible and preventable, usually in specific coach behavior that must be trained, supervised, and corrected.

Physical

The tangible damage. Common gymnastics risks and how coaching decisions (ignoring pain reports, mismanaging training load, rushing return-to-play, etc.) compound preventable injuries. It is impossible to dismiss as oversensitivity and is often the most visible entry point for people who are otherwise skeptical that gymnastics culture could cause real harm.

Psychological

Changes to a gymnast's identity over years of exposure. This includes the internalization of messages about body image, worth, and control. Such messaging becomes indistinguishable from one’s own voice. It's the hardest to see and the hardest to undo, and can be misattributed to individual temperament rather than traced back to its actual source.
